Nuclitalia moves toward selecting nuclear technology for Italy

Nuclitalia continues its assessment of light-water small modular reactors (SMR-LWRs) for Italy. A discussion held on 28 September at the University of Milano-Bicocca also brought industrial conditions and partnerships into focus.

On 28 September 2026, Luca Mastrantonio, CEO of Nuclitalia, and Roberto Adinolfi, Chairman of Ansaldo Nucleare, took part in “Orizzonte nucleare” at the University of Milano-Bicocca to discuss the future of Italy’s nuclear sector.

Technology selection is a concrete milestone to watch. In a document submitted to the Italian Chamber of Deputies in February 2026, Nuclitalia reported that it had screened more than 80 solutions and identified an initial shortlist of light-water small modular reactor technologies (SMR-LWRs). The company is conducting a technical and economic assessment alongside work on energy scenarios, partnership and financing models, and preliminary safety and site requirements.

The document envisages a final comparison and selection by November 2026. It does not disclose the technologies on the shortlist or announce a final choice.
